Introduction to Words That Are Similar and Often Confused

Module Objectives

– Learn to distinguish between word pairs that are often confused
– Review examples of paired words that writers frequently misuse
– Demonstrate competence in distinguishing between confusing words

Grammar also concerns word usage—that is, using the correct meaning of a word. Usually this isn’t a problem, but some words either sound or look so similar that it’s difficult to determine which one to use when writing. To help you distinguish between such words, we are providing you with a list of frequently misused terms such as advise/advice, effect/affect, loose/lose, lay/lie, who/whom, and so forth.

The list is in alphabetical order. Your task is to read and understand the definitions and explanations; then do the exercises at the end.

To navigate through the sections of the Words That Are Similar and Often Confused module use:

(1) the expandable upper left corner navigation tool or
(2) the navigation bar at the bottom of the page.
